Moving… a word that can bring stress to the most “zen” among us.  Spring and Summer are prime moving seasons.  Our team of organizers at Can the Clutter loves to help with any and all stages of moving, whether it be minimizing or downsizing prior to your move, packing, helping during move day, unpacking and setting up the new household, or managing the entire moving process.

These are some of the top 5 things that we have found to be key to making a move go smoothly.

  1. Figure out a system to keep your boxes organized – our team like to use a color-coded system, but there are many ways to create systems that will work well for you so that you know what goes where on move-in day. One key is to label what room it will be going to in the new home, not where it currently is in the existing home.  Also, create a box of essentials for Day 1 of your move as well as have each family member pack a suitcase, like they were going on a weekend trip, so that they have their essentials without having to dig through boxes for the first couple of days after the move.

  2. Designate a staging zone for boxes and moving supplies – if you are packing yourself, as boxes get packed it is nice to have one area for them to go instead of having them in every room of your home as you are living in it, so that you do not have to look at boxes 24-7.  A guest bedroom, garage or basement work well for this.

  3. Create a moving schedule – work backwards from your desired move-in date and schedule time for when you will get the work completed.  Packing sessions once a week work well for moves with a longer lead time (6 months out), 2-3 times a week is often needed for closer move date.

  4. Book resource to help – schedule the movers/moving truck as early as you have a firm move-in date. Spring and Summer are their busiest times, so getting booked early ensures you get the date you desire. You may also need a dumpster or hauler to take away large items that you do not want to move with you.

  5. Make a detailed plan for moving day – Moving Day is hectic. There are usually 3-4 movers moving fast to get your items loaded and unloaded. You need a plan for that day.  Having one person designated as the main contact for the moves is key. Also making sure that that person is stationed at the door to direct and answer questions the entire time is paramount. (No phone calls or other distractions!) This is your chance to make sure you don’t have to lug a heavy kitchen box from the basement where it got mistakenly placed during move-in day.

Organizing garages is one of our favorite projects, especially during the nice weather. It’s so satisfying to have this space set up with a home for all of the tools, sports equipment, automotive supplies, and outdoor hobby gear.

A “go to” product that we often use is the Rubbermaid FastTrack System. They have a hook/shelf/container for almost any need.
